Benefits of an open source approach

Buildings contribute to climate change. To get technical, buildings and construction account for 36% of global final energy use and 39% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The buildings and communities sector is a key contributor to BC’s carbon footprint, responsible for 22% of the total greenhouse gas emissions. If we want to curb the effects of climate change, we need to change the way we build and we need to do it now.

Turns out, that is easier said than done. The building and construction industry is notoriously slow to change. We build houses today using the same methods we used 100 years ago. To meet our global, national, and local climate goals, we have to change.

BOSS makes that change easier for the entire industry. BOSS creates a system to build simplistic healthy homes efficiently and sustainably, then shares that system with everyone.

We know that combating climate change is a group effort. We can’t keep working on our own. We need to collaborate as an entire industry to push for a cleaner future. It takes all of us to make a change. This open source nature of BOSS amplifies the potential positive effects. The impact of one builder is small, but the impact of an open source widely utilized system is massive.
